Staying at Van Heeckeren Hotel, Nes, Ameland

Home - Journeys - Netherland, Ameland, 2025 - Staying at Van Heeckeren Hotel, Nes, Ameland

Adress: Torenstraat 22, Nes, ,a href='https://www.ameland.nl'>Ameland.
Telephone: +31(0) 519 546 500 en +31(0) 620 703 648.
Internet: https://vanheeckerenhotel.nl/.

This hotel is just a few minutes' walk from the center of Nes. It's located on Torenstraat, but in a side street of the same name.
When you arrive, usually by bike, you'll immediately find the entrance, with a terrace and a bicycle shed with charging stations on the right, and another bicycle shed on the left. The reception is located behind the entrance, with a conservatory and the breakfast room on the right.
The welcome, in English, is friendly and efficient, and the necessary explanations are provided. Breakfast is served from 8:30 AM to 10:30 PM, and barista-style coffee can be ordered at reception. There's also a large minibar at reception, from which guests can purchase drinks for a fee at an ATM located on the minibar. The hotel closes around 10:30 PM, but the room card also opens the entrance. Guests must indicate their preference for room cleaning. If no cleaning is requested, it will be considered "Do Not Disturb." And last but not least, all interior spaces throughout the hotel are non-smoking, and there is free, unsecured Wi-Fi.
And last but not least, we are offered a welcome drink: coffee, tea, or a sparkling drink with or without alcohol.

The reception area's decor is modern yet warm, with plenty of wood tones, a feature echoed throughout the rest of the hotel.
Many hotel staff only speak English; it's proving difficult to find competent Dutch-speaking staff for extended stays on Ameland.
We're having a hard time getting a sense of the hotel's layout, but it will become clearer later. Adjacent to the reception area is the breakfast room and two conservatories where breakfast is also served.

We booked a Superior room, approximately 25 square meters in size, and we were given a ground-floor room with a small terrace overlooking a garden.
The room has a very comfortable double bed, a small wardrobe, a minibar (available at reception), and a coffee and tea machine. We were able to make coffee, but unfortunately, not espresso. There is also a comfortable two-seater sofa, a small coffee table, and a small table with a portable gramophone containing LPs and a portable radio. There is a large flat-screen TV with at least some Dutch channels. And of course, there is quiet air conditioning that also serves as heating, and a smoke detector.
Next to the entrance is a separate toilet, which we think is a bit too high, as we're not very tall.
The bathroom, without a toilet, has a nice sink with plenty of storage space underneath. There are two rain showers and two hand showers in a single glass shower enclosure. There are dispensers with soap and shampoo on both the sink and in the shower enclosure.
Neither the toilet nor the bathroom can be locked.
There's enough space to store our luggage, in our case a trolley and four panniers, but it would have been nice to have more storage.
We also find the floor very cold; unfortunately, there's no underfloor heating.

Breakfast is very good; it's a buffet. There are a few types of rolls, which are baked on-site; and there's bread made with flour milled in Nes.
Three or four types of cheese are available, but you have to cut them yourself with a cheese slicer.
Deli meats, five or six types, are pre-sliced.
Coffee and tea are available, as are various types of fruit juice. Fruit is also plentiful, as are yogurt products.
Eggs are ready to go, boiled, fried, scrambled, with or without bacon.
The quantities available aren't very large, but as soon as something runs out, it's replenished very quickly. It stays fresh and prevents waste.

We were here on Monday 14 april 2025, on Tuesday 15 april 2025, on Wednesday 16 april 2025 and on Thursday 17 april 2025.
